PROBLEMS AND ADVICE

The word ADVICE is an uncountable noun, so it does not have a plural form and cannot be used with the article an

Eg. He gave me some advice (not He gave me an advice or He gave me advices)

The correct form is: Let me give you some advice!

If you want to refer to a single item of advice, you can use the expression: "a piece of...", "a word of..." or "a bit of...". However, these expressions are not very common. The word ADVICE is mainly used on its own.

Eg. If you are worried about your symptons, contact your doctor for advice.

The expression some advice is also very common:

Eg. I really need some advice on my career prospects.

Do not confuse advice and advise. Advice is a noun whereas advise is a verb.

Incorrect: I would advice you to quit smoking.
Correct: I would advise you to quit smoking.

VERBS WITH DEPENDENT PREPOSITIONS
Some verbs in English are followed by prepositions before the object of the verb. These are called DEPENDENT PREPOSITIONS and they are followed by a noun or a gerund (-ing form).

Unfortunately, there are no fixed rules that can help you decide which dependent prepositions should be placed with which words. You really just need to learn them by heart!

Here are some verbs with their dependent prepositions. When you finish studying them, you can try these drop activities.
